Hartpury Academy rider qualifies for National Finals
One of Hartpury College’s Show Jumping academy riders has recently experienced great competition success, winning the BSJA 1.20m Amateur Qualifier held at the College and qualifying for the National Amateur Finals at Arena UK.

EAC Alumnus Charlie Bays’2005 is in his third year of the BSc Equine Sports Science Degree and has been on the Elite Academy squad for over 2 years. His horse, Arkan II, is a 7 year old Belgium Warmblood gelding who he bought after moving to England from Brazil. The pair has come along way since starting at Hartpury and, with the support of Hartpury Academy Director Nick Burton; they are now going out and winning competitions.
Charlie is really pleased with their progress, especially as his horse is still relatively inexperienced:
“This competition was the first time I have really pushed Arkan II for the win in the jump off and he really gave all his heart. I expected him to have maybe one fence down due to his inexperience, but he wanted to win just as much as I did. We went clear and were two seconds ahead of the second place.”
Being on the Elite Academy means that Charlie and Arkan II have access to weekly lessons and training from Nick Burton and Jeremy Michaels as well as use of the fantastic equestrian facilities onsite at Hartpury. Charlie feels that the training at Hartpury has helped him immensely:
”My lessons with Nick have helped so much and I have improved a lot since being at Hartpury.”
